Multilingual language translator for natural hazard warnings

The Challenge

The Australian Warning System is designed to deliver clear and well-understood messages based on extensive experience and research. It covers various hazards, from bushfires to severe weather, and is shared across multiple platforms with dynamic inputs such as social media posts and text messages. These warnings must be created, updated, and published swiftly in response to real-time events. However, since they are written in English, there is a risk that they may not effectively reach all residents, particularly those in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) communities, who may have English as a second language. This language barrier could hinder the effectiveness of the warnings in ensuring the safety of all Australians.

The Solution

VideoTranslator is partnering with the University of Newcastle to use AI for translating hazard warnings into various languages, allowing community members to read them in their preferred language. Their solution ensures that the carefully chosen terminology of hazard warnings is preserved during translation. This automatic translation of warnings will enhance their reach and timeliness, ensuring that all communities, including those with limited English proficiency, can understand the warnings, risks, and recommended actions. This initiative aims to include everyone in the safety measures, making sure no one is left out due to language barriers.
