Jericho Smart Sensing Laboratory recognised at the 2020 dmi: Design Value Awards

The Jericho Smart Sensing Laboratory has been recognised at the 2020 dmi: Design Value Awards with an Honourable Mention for delivering significant value through the excellence of Design for the Royal Australian Air Force.

The Design Management Institute (DMI) is the premier global (non-profit) organization that connects, promotes, and elevates the role of Design, Design Management and Design Innovation in business, culture and society.

The collaborative project between the University of Sydney and Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) encompasses the Jericho Smart Sensing Laboratory (JSSL) supported by Sydney Nano and NSW Smart Sensing Network (NSSN).

Over a two-year engagement, the JSSL’s aim was to enable the design, development, and integration of future generation smart sensing technologies to strengthen Australia’s defence capabilities using design innovation methods.

The JSSL utilised its expertise in SWaP (Size Weight and Power) core sensors and sensing data fusion to deliver a network of interconnected smart sensors to form a prototype of the Internet of Defence Things (IoDT).

The objective of bringing design into a nanoscience laboratory was to better understand the end user’s (RAAF) problems and frame the technology development towards building a tangible prototype that tests the ideas with the end user in field application.

The design approach challenges the traditional operating picture in both high-end science research and Defence technology development. The science was driven by an embedded design thinking approach to extract the maximum creative solutions in the shortest possible time in order to accelerate innovation for defence deployment.

This approach can be used as a model to accelerate much of Australia’s sovereign, leading-edge science designed for the end user. In addition to the Air Force, it can be transferred to other domains; land, air, sea, space, and cyber arenas can all benefit from the results of this partnership.
