NSSN Annual Retreat 2020: delivering impact in a brave new world
The NSSN Annual Retreat took place on 17 November 2020 at the Sydney Institute of Marine Science. At this year’s retreat, the NSSN team came together with the NSSN Board and leadership to reflect on the achievements of the year and to chart the Network’s course for the coming year.
NSSN Board Chair Dr Susan Pond AM opened the event and said the NSSN can deliver significant impact in this brave new world where smart sensing is coming of age.
“The whole world is being digitised using sensors that capture, understand, operate robots and use artificial intelligence,” said Dr Pond.
The event continued with a panel discussion between NSSN Board Members including Mr Peter Runcie, Dr Paul Scully-Power AM, Ms Jo White and Mr Frank Zeichner. The panel reflected on NSSN capabilities and provided insights into the Network’s future direction.
NSSN COO Mr Nicholas Haskins said this year’s annual retreat was particularly important as NSSN is in the midst of drafting the strategic plan for the coming three years.
“The day provided an opportunity for the team and the board to reflect on our successes to date and to really interrogate our remit and ambitions for the future,” said Mr Haskins.
Following the panel discussion, the NSSN team came together in two workshops and reflected on the Network’s strategic position and contributed to the road map that will guide the Network’s operations over the next three years.
The NSSN Grand Challenges program (launched in 2020) continues to be a central focus for the Network moving forward.
The NSSN Grand Challenges respond to some of the most gripping challenges of our time, including Bushfires, Water, COVID-19 and Ageing. More Grand Challenges are to be rolled out in 2021.
The Grand Challenges have been selected for the important role smart sensing can play in responding to the issue.
The NSSN mobilises the world-class R&D capability across its member universities in partnership with industry and government to deliver practical and impactful outcomes to these challenges.
The Network also aims to streamline pathways to commercialisation and IP generation to maximise delivering tangible value to its member universities and industry and government partners.
