Smart Sensing for a Post-COVID-19 World

University researchers will collaborate with industry and government partners to develop anti-viral personalised protective equipment, improved population screening techniques and smart hygiene monitoring systems for public places.

The NSW Smart Sensing Network (NSSN), a consortium of eight leading universities across NSW and ACT, hosted a series of five virtual workshops in May 2020 that brought together academia, industry and government to explore the role that smart sensing technologies can play in responding to the pandemic.

Resulting from these five workshops, three project proposals were developed, including Improved Personalised Protective Equipment, Improved Screening of Populations for Better Public Health and, Monitoring Good Hygiene Practices at Public Settings & Workplaces.

Mr Nicholas Haskins, COO at NSSN, said in the first proposed project, the anti-viral coating will be applied to personalised moulded face shields to help prevent viral load of COVID-19.

"This project is particularly focused on protecting frontline health workers from contracting COVID-19," said Mr Haskins. "This could be a game changer for the medical industry and is also quite important in workplace health and safety for hospitals and other medical settings."

The second proposed project will improve existing public screening techniques to prevent the transmission of COVID-19 in large public settings such as stadiums, schools and shopping centres.

The third proposed project will combine smart sensing with artificial intelligence to collect and process anonymised data to inform decision makers on hand washing and sanitising practices taking place within public facilities such as hospitals.

"The NSSN quickly pivoted to address COVID-19," said Mr Haskins. "Through the collaborative power of the network, we're coming up with some really interesting cutting edge solutions to COVID-19 and making sure that we can get our economy back on track very quickly."

The project proposals were developed based on their ability for impact and the identified genuine interest of industry and government partners.
