NSSN co-hosts Deep Dive into Smart Sensing event series
Co-hosted by the NSW Smart Sensing Network and Sydney Knowledge Hub, the Deep Dive into Smart Sensing event series will be delivered across four events in May and June 2021.
The Series allows researchers interested in commercialisation and startups to find industry partners and grow their businesses while supporting the growth of the R&D ecosystem in NSW.
Sydney Knowledge Hub Director Rupal Ismin said commercialisation pathways are opaque for many researchers, and startups, who can potentially benefit from leveraged funding from the government for academic collaboration, are often unsure of how to work with researchers.
“The purpose of these deep dives is to provide forums for research innovation to connect with market opportunities, as well as to educate both researchers and SMEs on the mechanisms of how they can work together,” said Ms Ismin.
The Deep Dive into Smart Sensing series will kick off with a startup panel on 5 May 2021. In partnership with UTS Startups and NSSN, the event will be incorporated as part UTS RESHub launch and will include a panel discussion on the opportunities for entrepreneurs to develop life-changing products using smart sensing.
The second event in the Series will focus on how researchers can commercialise their invention. The event is aimed at academics and postgraduate research students interested in commercialising their research. NSSN MedTech Theme Leader Ms Jane Evans will speak at this event.
The third event in the Series, Developing Your Business with the University of Sydney, is aimed at startups and SMEs working with smart sensing technologies. Topics of discussion include accessing NSW and federal funding, R&D tax incentives, and the advantages of working with universities. NSSN AgTech Theme Leader Dr Tomonori Hu will speak at this event.
The Sydney Knowledge Hub Deep Dive event series will move on form smart sensing in June to cover other themes such as advanced manufacturing and circular economy.
“The themes are based on the University of Sydney and government priority areas – sectors with tremendous economic potential that require collaboration between industry and academia,” said Ms Ismin.
“We will likely close out the year with a deep dive in Circular Economy, to offer continuity of the Australia Circular Economy Conference, which we co-produced last year and had 750 attendees.”

The NSW Smart Sensing Network (NSSN), an initiative of the NSW Government Office of the Chief Scientist and Engineer, is a consortium of eight leading universities across NSW and the ACT that brings together academia, industry and government to develop smart sensing solutions for complex challenges.
Working with the NSSN simplifies the process of engaging with universities by creating a single point-of-contact for the leading research suppliers in NSW.
The Sydney Knowledge Hub helps researchers at the University of Sydney connect to the outside world. The Sydney Knowledge Hub operates coworking in the heart of the Darlington Campus for research-based startups coming out of the university and for innovative businesses seeking to collaborate with the university.
