As part of the University of Sydney’s School of Civil Engineering TransportLab Series, the NSSN’s Data Research Theme Leader, Dr Zhitao Xiong, will deliver a seminar on the importance of sensors in autonomous vehicle testing.
Sensors are the driving force of some emerging technologies such as autonomous vehicles and Internet of Things (IoT). They can provide imagery, point cloud and localisation data in real-time for knowledge extraction such as lane detection and pedestrian recognition. The test of those emerging technologies with sensors in the loop is therefore crucial to ensure relevant decision making such as autonomous driving to be controllable and repeatable if they are exposed to similar environment.
In this talk, Dr Xiong will firstly talk about the establishment of formal test cases for autonomous vehicles and then an Ontology for Sensor Capability Mapping (OSCM) that can be used as the world model for heterogeneous sensor data representation and reasoning, which enables the test of autonomous vehicle with sensors in the loop, as it represents sensor capability in relevant decision making and can be used to test sensors’ performance in, e.g., Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) communications and driving decision making within autonomous vehicles. He will then introduce the ongoing work on transferring the OSCM into a web tool named “Stage” that can be used to unify, visualise and fuse the sensing data for broader applications.
