We are hiring a Media & PR Officer to lead our communications program and to shout to the world about the great work we do!

Position Summary

The NSSN Media and Public Relations Officer is responsible for three broad areas: developing and disseminating communications to external audiences; monitoring and measuring media and publicity impact, and developing media and public relations strategy.

The Media and Public Relations Officer reports to the NSSN Chief Operating Officer and has no direct reports.

  • Salary Level 7 ($68.87 per hour)

  • Casual

  • Location: Kensington – Sydney, Australia

  • Flexible working arrangements/up to 35 hours per week with flexibility throughout the year (hybrid work from home/office)

Accountabilities

Specific accountabilities for this role include:

  • Develop and implement communications strategies to raise the profile of programs and outcomes of the NSW Smart Sensing Network (NSSN), incorporating internal and digital communications, media outreach, social media platform management and stakeholder engagement.

  • Lead the development of social media content based on research outcomes, industry partnerships, and research profiles to achieve outreach objectives.

  • Prepare and distribute external communications content that strongly profiles NSSN via the NSSN monthly Newsletter.

  • Develop media releases, key messages and briefing notes as required.

  • Support the delivery and promotion of all events, funds and campaigns of the Network, meeting defined objectives and to ensure maximum profile for the NSSN.

  • Assist in the researching, writing, preparation and layout of the NSSN Annual Report.

  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including government, industry and academic partners.

  • Deliver a highly client-centric service and demonstrate commitment to excellence and continuous improvement.

  • Assist in delivering communications programs which deliver timely, targeted, creative, engaging and cost-effective external communications.

  • Achieve agreed outcomes and identify opportunities to improve the quality or efficacy of communications.

  • Utilise quantitative and qualitative data to continually enhance NSSN communications.

  • Be a brand advocate and drive positive brand positioning through all external and internal communications.

  • Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct.

  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.

Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism or Public Relations/ A relevant tertiary qualification and a depth of subsequent relevant experience or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any combination of education, training and experience.

  • Demonstrated experience assisting with developing, delivering and measuring external communications and branding programs.

  • Demonstrated experience in distilling complex information into straight forward messages for communication to a diverse group of stakeholders, in support of strategic goals.

  • Proven ability to liaise effectively with all levels of internal and external stakeholders, and exercise creativity and enthusiasm in the development of new initiatives.

  • Excellent time management and organisational skills, with the ability to navigate through competing deadlines.

  • Superior written and verbal communication skills and the proven ability to influence and negotiate with stakeholders to achieve successful outcomes.

  • Highly motivated with ambition for a career in corporate, government or science communication.

  • Innovative and agile thinker with the ability to suggest new ideas and open new pathways to exposure.

  • Adaptable and flexible team player who can work dynamically.

  • Ability to deliver results at a self-guided pace with limited direct supervision

  • Advanced level of computer literacy with excellent skills in Microsoft Office applications and databases

  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.

  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training
